FAQ’s

What happens in a Shiatsu session?

Shiatsu sessions take approx 1 hour and typically cover the whole body. Treatments take place at floor level on a futon or on a massage table, with the client wearing loose comfortable clothing.

At your first session I will take a detailed case history to develop a complete picture of your health according to the principles of oriental medicine and discuss how you would like shiatsu to help you. I will then use a variety of techniques to improve your energy flow. These may include gentle holding, pressing with palms, thumbs, fingers, elbows, knees and feet on the meridians and , when appropriate more dynamic rotations and stretches.

Following a treatment, there can be a feeling of increased vitality and you may feel invigorated, yet relaxed. It is also quite common to feel tired after a treatment, this is just your energy system rebalancing and it will pass quickly. Drink plenty of water and don’t do anything too strenuous after a treatment.

I may also show you specific exercises or acupressure points, or make general nutritional and/or lifestyle suggestions to support the treatment.

How many sessions do I need? How often can I have shiatsu ?

This is totally up to you and depends what you are hoping to gain from shiatsu. One session will be a relaxing enjoyable experience but to get the most benefit from shiatsu, 4-5 regular treatments every 2-4 weeks is a good place to start to see lasting benefits.

If you have had a chronic condition for a long time, you will benefit most from a few regular sessions. Many clients use regular shiatsu sessions to maintain wellbeing and manage stress in their lives.

Do I have to have anything wrong with me to benefit from shiatsu?

No you don’t have to have anything wrong with you.  Everyone can benefit from regular shiatsu. Shiatsu is deeply nourishing and relaxing to receive. It melts physical tension from the body and calms mental agitation. Shiatsu is safe and effective for people of all ages, from young children to the elderly. Young children need shorter sessions, typically 20-30 mins.
